ENVIRONMENT

The environment has a direct relationship to the economic development of regions, and is generally an important field of activity in our Euroregion. The quality of the environment of a region (air, water, physical characteristics of the landscape, buildings and infrastructure) is a key aspect of the quality of life for people living there, and increasingly, has an influence on the potential for developing new economic activities and employment. The emphasis in policy on the promotion of sustainable forms of development in tourism and economic activity generally involves avoiding activities, which are harmful to the environment and natural resources, and a focus on promoting activities, which have a positive environmental impact. Therefore one of the tasks and challenges of the Euroregion will in terms of Economic development be that Economic development policies and actions must focus on the sustainable use of natural resources; and ensure that industrial and production activities are not harmful to the natural environment and the ecological balance of the area. Environmental quality is an important factor in attracting investment and new business location based on the services sector and using “clean technologies”, market development and the marketing of products of regions (especially food, crafts) as well as new service industries in tourism and leisure. A high environmental quality is also important in retaining and attracting people to border regions - to live, to work and to visit. In our Euroregion, the improvement and management of the environment needs to be undertaken in the framework of cross-border co-operation and planning in order to effectively address problems which affect the region as a whole. In promoting sustainable development, there is a growing understanding that environmental issues must be integrated into regional planning and development. This is therefore a “natural” area for cross-border co-operation since environmental issues such as problems of air pollution and polluted waterways and the impact of major infrastructure projects in border regions cannot be contained within national boundaries.
